A Study of Dental Pathology in River Otters (Lontra canadensis) in Arkansas

چکیده

River otters (Lontra canadensis) consume a variety of foods, including mussels, fishes, and crayfishes. These foods have hard body parts that cause wear the teeth as predator ages incurs more damaging feeding experiences. This can lead to exposure pulp cavity possible abscess resorption bone around alveolus. Further, strong bites against harder prey sometimes results in mechanical breakage, which pulpitis severe pathology leading tooth loss. We investigated frequency different forms dental issues sample 178 skulls river collected from Arkansas. Canines carnassial teeth, most used capture mastication prey, were severely affected. Based on post-traumatic wear, it is evident are able survive disease.

Fatty acid analysis as a tool to infer the diet in Illinois river otters (Lontra canadensis)

Fatty acids (FA) have recently been used in several studies to infer the diet in a number of species. While these studies have been largely successful, most have dealt with predators that have a fairly specialized diet. In this paper, we used FA analysis as a tool to infer the diet of the nearctic river otter (Lontra canadensis). The river otter is an opportunistic predator known to subsist on ...

The identification of a genetically unique piroplasma in North American river otters (Lontra canadensis).

During a routine health check of a wild-caught North American river otter (Lontra canadensis) small piroplasms were noted within erythrocytes. Analyses of the 18S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) gene sequences determined that this was a genetically unique organism most closely related to Babesia microti-like parasites found in other small carnivores. Subsequently 39 wild-trapped North America...

Effects of mercury on neurochemical receptors in wild river otters (Lontra canadensis).

Fish-eating wildlife, such as river otters (Lontra canadensis), accumulate mercury (Hg) at concentrations known to impair animal behavior, but few studies have explored the underlying biochemical changes that precede clinical neurotoxicity. The objective of this study was to determine if Hg exposure can be related to concentrations of neurochemical receptors in river otters. River otter carcass...

Correlates of mercury in female river otters (Lontra canadensis) from Nova Scotia, Canada.

Mercury (Hg) can reach toxic concentrations in aquatic habitats, sometimes as a consequence of human activity. Mercury can have deleterious effects, particularly in piscivorous mammals in which it bioaccumulates. Furs from trapper-provided female otter (Lontra canadensis) carcasses in Nova Scotia were analyzed for total Hg. Concentrations of total Hg in fur samples averaged 25 µg/g dry weight, ...

Hematology and serum biochemistry parameters of North American river otters (Lontra canadensis).

Blood samples were obtained from 155 North American river otters (Lontra canadensis; 94 adult males, 38 adult females, 10 juvenile males, and 13 juvenile females) to establish baseline hematology and from 50 adult river otters (40 males and 10 females) for baseline serum biochemistry parameters for the species. The otters were livetrapped from eastern North Carolina (USA) during a 4-yr period. ...
